Achte beim Vergleich auf Kosten

FAQ

A current account is the central account for everyday payments. Salary deposits, transfers, standing orders, direct debits and card payments all run through it. Unlike a savings or call deposit account, it is not meant for investing money but for use at any time. It often comes with a debit card, online banking and, depending on the provider, an overdraft facility.

Most banks let you open an account online. You fill in the application with your personal details and confirm your identity via Video-Ident, Post-Ident or an electronic ID. You usually need a valid ID and a registered address. The account is then usually ready to use within a few days, and with digital providers sometimes within minutes to hours.

Possible costs include a monthly account fee, fees for the card, charges for cash withdrawals at other banks’ ATMs, and foreign currency fees. If you overdraw the account, overdraft interest applies, which is usually much higher than on an installment loan. Many banks offer free account management if a minimum monthly deposit is received regularly. It is therefore worth comparing the conditions, not just the advertised fee.

First you open the new account, then you move your salary deposit, standing orders and direct debits to the new IBAN. Many banks offer a free account switching service that automatically informs your payment partners. You should only close the old account once all recurring payments have been switched, so that no direct debits fail.
